From Kensington, take Route 20 north for 15.5 km (9.7 miles) then turn left onto Lower Darnley Road. After 2.7 km (1.7 miles), turn right onto Lighthouse Road and you will see the Malpeque Outer Back Range Light in a field on your left.

**Note that Lighthouse Road is PRIVATE.

**To get close to the lights, you can stay at Beach Meadow Cottages. 

* Grounds/tower closed.The tower can be viewed from the Front Range which can be approached from the beach via Twin Shores Campground.



The Back Range Light is a square tapered tower, 7.7m - 25.2' high. It has a superimposed gallery. The simple lantern deck is made of wooden planks surrounded by a metal railing and supported by metal brackets. The shingled tower is painted white with a vertical red stripe on the seaward side.The door and single window have shed dormers painted red.

It has been moved often to align with the front light and shifting channel. The tower is located in a farmer’s field, but can easily be seen from the road.

Historic Data:

The Original light in 1889 was a lantern hoisted on a 9.1 m( 30 ft) mast with a shed at its base. The current back range has been moved many times due to the shifting channel.

Established in 1889, the original light was a 9.1m (30 foot) mast with a shed at its base. The current square tapered wooden Back Range was built in 1897 as an open frame tower and later enclosed and shingled.

The current light was designed by the Department of Marine and was built by M. Walsh.

Current Owners/ Operators:

Government of Canada. A petition has been submited to obtain ownership under the Parks Canada Heritage Lighthouse Program.

Special Events/Activities:

Malpeque Back Range Light was registered under the Prince Edward Island Heritage Places Protection Act on July 12, 2012.
